Olga Gorbachev obtained her MA, MPhil and a PhD from Columbia University. She received her BA in Economics from Brown University.
Olga's primary field of specialization is Applied Macroeconomics. Her research encompasses a broad range of topics: from household level consumption volatility to industry level volatility of production and employment. There have been several significant changes in the patterns of volatility in the US economy over the past few decades. Olga examined the effects of some of these changes in the context of production and employment in previous joint work with Graciela Chichilnisky [2004, 2005]. Her job market paper highlighted how, in the context of consumption, aggregate declines in volatility might mask greater risks borne at the household level. Resolving the reasons underlying the increase in idiosyncratic shocks to both income and consumption, and the role played by financial innovation, are the key components of Olga's future research agenda on economic volatility and welfare.
