Stuart Sayer was an undergraduate and graduate scholar at the University of Oxford, and Lecturer at Mansfield College, Oxford, before moving to the University of Edinburgh in 1977. He has been the Head of Economics at Edinburgh since 2000 and Executive Director of the Scottish Institute for Research in Economics (SIRE) since its creation in 2006. He has held Visiting Professorships at Villanova University, PA, and Union College, NY. In 2005 he won the Outstanding Teaching Award of the Economics Network of the UK-wide Higher Education Academy. He has been Editor of the Journal of Economic Surveys since 1987 and Managing Editor since 2003.

His research is in macroeconomic and monetary theory and policy, political economy and economic policy-making. His work spans a broad range from the economic analysis of frontier regions, through more abstract analyses of the economics of Keynes, macro-policy modelling, and central bank independence, to more applied work on UK fiscal and monetary policy and the market for economic advisors.
