Conferences

Mini-conferences linked to programme themes and/or exploring cross-programme synergies will be posted as they become available. These mini conferences will generally last for one or two days, and comprise a series of themed seminars & workshops from a mix of external and SIRE participants

BIC Theory Conference: 6 October 2012

The BIC ‘Theory’ conference was held on Saturday 6 October, in the Faculty Room South, David Hume Tower at the University of Edinburgh.

Guest speakers include Klaus Schmidt (Munich) and Olivier Compte (PSE) with additional contributions by S. Sánchez-Pagés (U. Barcelona/UoE), M. Costa-Gomes (Aberdeen), M. Mueller-Frank (Oxford), N. Vikander (UoE), G. Gerasimou (St. Andrews) and P. Kircher (UoE). 

The closing remarks were offered by John Moore.

Cornell University and the University of Edinburgh, with the support of the British Academy, hosted a major international conference on “Relativity, Inequality and Public Policy”, held on June 5-7, 2009, in Edinburgh. Speakers at this 3-day conference included Carol Graham, Andrew Oswald, Matthew Rabin, Imran Rasul, Aldo Rustichini, Bernard van Praag, Lise Vesterlund and Shlomo Yitzhaki.

On Monday 30 November 2009, the Behaviour, Incentives and Contracts (BIC) programme of SIRE presented an afternoon of behavioural and experimental economics, outlining some of the latest work in this area undertaken by SIRE associated researchers. The meeting took place in the Informatics Forum of the University of Edinburgh, located just off George Square, Edinburgh.

Lectures

Public Lectures aimed at disseminating BIC research to a wider audience and contributing to public debate will be posted as they become available. Some recent public lectures, linked to BIC, include: Ed Hopkins (Edinburgh), Running to keep in the same place: Consumer choice as a game of status (Thomson Prize Lecture) and Joseph Stiglitz (Columbia), Globalization and the 21st Century Enlightenment

The University of Edinburgh is also the Scottish host for the Royal Economic Society Public Lecture given annually in Edinburgh and London. The 2006 lecture in this series was:

WAR AND PEACE IN AFRICA Professor Paul Collier is Professor of Economics at Oxford University and Director of the Centre for the Study of African Economies. For five years he was Director of the research department of the World Bank, brought in by Joe Stiglitz, and he was senior advisor to the Commission for Africa.
